Family Place


Program Description

Family Place Parent/Child Workshops are typically very informal and stress children learning through play.  Workshops consist of five weekly sessions, which parents must attend with their child, who must be between 1 and 3 years of age.  Each session will feature a visiting professional knowledgeable in areas such as speech, nutrition, or child development.  Instead of lecturing to parents the visitng professiona circulates through the room speaking with parents one on one and addressing their individual concerns and questions.  The children’s librarian will also circulate through the room talking to parents about the importance of reading with their child and early literacy skill and helping parents to locate library materials.  Parents and child are also encourages to socialize with one another.  Each workshop will also include themed displays that relate to the guest speakers topic and the workshop will include an age appropriate craft.

Instant pudding mix
Food coloring
Masking tape
Put about ¼ cup of pudding in Ziploc bag.  Zip shut tightly after squeezing most of the air out of the bag.  Reinforce sides and corners with double layers of masking tape.  Squish bag serves as a portable fingerpainting platform, without the mess (Ernst 1995 p.63-64).

$75 for craft supplies

Staff/Volunteers

All the guest speaker are volunteering their time.  The children’s librarian should be present to help parents choose books, educate parents on early literacy, and to perform storytime.  At least one support staff member should be included in the workshop to help parents and children with the craft activity and to help locate library materials. 

Marketing/Advertising

The Family Place Workshops will be advertised on the library website, on flyers in the library, and on parentsclick.com.  The library will send press releases to The Santa Barbara News Press, Santa Barbara Independent, and local television and radio stations.  Additionally, the library will send flyers advertising the workshop to local preschools and other local organizations involved
