Young Readers Parent/Child Book Club
Description
The Young Readers Parent/Child Book Club is a book club for children in grades 1 through 3 and their parents.  The program takes place during the summer vacation and consisted of three 30 minute book discussions.  Parents and children will be given reading packets one month prior to the discussion.  Each reading packet consists of two copies of the chosen book and a copy of discussion questions about the book.  Parent and child should read the book prior to the book discussion and come prepared to share their thoughts about the book.  According to Gelman and Krupp young readers book clubs build positive associations with reading and helps boost early academic skills in young children (2007, p. 4).  For June the club will be reading Clementine by Sara Pennypacker. In July they will be reading Jack Drake, Class Clown by Andrew Clements and in August the club will read Gooney Bird, Greene by Lois Lowery.
Costs
The primary cost for this program is the books needed for the participants.  To help keep costs low and because participants get to keep the books at the end of the program, paperback books will be used for the program.  20 copies will be needed of each book.  If the library purchases the books through BWI they can save 20 percent off of the list price for the books.  The total cost for all the books is $271.52, if purchased through BWI.
